Andrew is a Chartered Engineer with 40 years’ experience in building structures in the Aviation, Defence, Retail and Commercial sector projects.
He has experience in large and complex Airport projects up to £100 million in value.
Andrew has a wide range of experience and interest from prestigious civic architecture through to historic buildings. Early on in his career he had experience of public corporations and working for large Contractors, overseas experience and of working for government agencies, which has given him a wide perspective on the decision making and building process.
Andrew is especially interested in solving building problems from first principles and in using advanced building computer software. After working for a large consultancy practice, WSP group for several years he joined SDB.
RELEVANT EXPERIENCE Aviation Sector Projects Gatwick South Terminal – Pier 1 and Baggage Factory: Client VINCI Construction UK Ltd, Project Design Engineer The project is for a new Pier 1 Building and improved operations with upgraded baggage storage and sortation system within. The baggage platforms are located at apron level and first floor levels. SDB designed all structural elements associated with the baggage factory facility, undertaken in coordination with the baggage integrator Millar Management, baggage supplier Beumer UK Ltd and the lead consultants Bryden Wood Limited. Heathrow Terminals 1, 3 4 & 5 New Model Lines: Client Balfour Beatty, Project Design Engineer Provided solution development, production and construction stage structural design for the installation of Automatic Ticket Presentation (ATP) Machines in Terminals 1, 3, 4 and 5. Project work included development of enhanced security search lanes, incorporating new X-ray Machines. Structural design input involved survey of existing floor structures, adequacy assessment to support new concentrated loading, design of enhancements where necessary and development of services penetrations and fixings to existing structure. Heathrow Airport Terminals 1 & 4 Baggage Improvement: Client Mace, Project Lead Engineer The £50 million Baggage Improvements at Terminals 1 & 4 allow for improved inter Terminal operations and bag storage. The project incorporates major revisions and adaptations to existing live baggage facilities for new baggage connectivity platforms within the Terminal and ancillary buildings including design of a new 80m x 12m baggage shed built around an existing live baggage facility. Heathrow Airport Terminal 4, Baggage: Client Mace, Project Lead Engineer The £40 million Baggage Improvements at Terminal 4 allow for increased capacity required for Airline moves. The project incorporated a major three 3 storey steel framed baggage building subject to jet blast and sited over LUL and HEx tunnels requiring WSP in formal detailed negotiations to complete the approval process. The Terminal work required extensive baggage line alterations and Terminal Reclaim Hall fit out. Heathrow Airport Terminal 3, Western Interface Building: Project Lead Engineer The £50 million Western Interface Building (WIB) at London Heathrow provides an automated baggage link between the new Terminal 5 and the other terminals at the Central Terminal Area. The building designed by Andrew, now operational, is a three storey steel frame sway structure including long span trusses and beams to bridge over the vehicle docks and DCV ramp. The WIB structure is located over the PICCex tunnels and required formal detailed negotiations with LUL. Early work involved full scheme design of the adjacent major T3 integrated baggage building. Stansted Airport, Terminal Extension: Project Lead Site Engineer A £35 million extension to the original Foster designed building. The project features large tree structures at 36 metre centres supporting roof diagrids and a lightweight roof, creating expansive free space at concourse level. The foundation works also provided various challenges requiring resolution with site design. London Heathrow Terminal 1, Major refurbishment: Project Lead Engineer Terminal 1 underwent major changes due to the relocation of the ‘Star’ group of airlines. There were alterations to the baggage conveyors routes, check-in areas, vehicle routing and retail at Departures and Arrivals levels and at the baggage mezzanine. The project cost was approximately £40m. Other ProjectS Rochdale Road Manchester, £30m: Project Lead Engineer A major new build twin tower residential medium rise residential project. The 20 storey and 12 storey towers incorporate a two level basement designed by Andrew and has a swimming pool on the eighteenth floor with a two storey cantilevered 70T rooftop glass atrium supported by his design. New Providence Wharf, East London, £30m: Project Engineer A major 24 storey residential tower and Hotel complex built directly over the Blackwall tunnel. Andrew was responsible for the raft design over the tunnel on which these structures were built. Canary Wharf BP1 (Barclays) East London £100m: Project Engineer Andrew designed the roof steelwork and front atrium façade steelwork and the roof gantries for façade access system. Canary Wharf DS4, East London £50m: Project Engineer A 14 storey office block Andrew designed the lower basement floors and the elevated main roadway that runs outside the building. This incorporated a large span concrete cantilever with heavy vehicle (HA) loading. Other projects as Project Engineer Andrew has led or worked on include large sections of Retail complexes, Woolwich Courthouse with prisoner access tunnel, Rail maintenance infrastructure contract preparation, Hospital refurbishment and new build, ground Air Defence bunker using blast standards, and middle East military base maintenance experience. Andrew also has extensive experience of working with or for Contractors and Local Authorities. |
